The national currency "tenge" was introduced on November 15, 1993.

This day was a historic one because Kazakhstan confirmed its status as an independent state by this action.

On November 3, 1993, Special State Commission was created by the decree of the Head of State, which formed working group under the leadership of financier Daulet Sembayev. The State Commission was attended by the First President of Kazakhstan - Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev who constantly monitored the quality of assigned tasks. During a great discussion on issue of national currency naming - proposal of academician Takezhanov to name the national currency "tenge" was unanimously approved.

A large team of authors, headed by famous architect and artist, Timur Suleimenov, was involved in creating the design of "tenge".

Currency notes are printed at the banknote factory in Almaty, and coins are minted at the Mint Palace in Ust-Kamenogorsk since 1995.
