The UN predicts that by 2050 the world's population will be 9.3 billion, of which 6.3 billion, or 67.7%, will be urban (urban population in 2019 - 4.3 billion, 55.7%).
Urbanization as a megatrend will stimulate economic growth. The largest agglomeration cities will form a new economic map of the world. By 2025, 2,600 major cities will generate 81% of the world's GDP, of which 600 cities will generate 64% and 1,000 cities will generate 71%.
The population concentrated in cities and development of "knowledge economy" sectors provide higher productivity (20 - 50% higher than in the rest of the territories). Competition between cities for talent, investment and other things is increasing.
At the same time, urbanization must be accompanied by the appropriate development of social facilities, housing and public utilities infrastructure, and urban transportation systems to meet the needs of the growing population. In order to monitor and evaluate the quality and comfort of life in cities, Economic Research Institute JSC (ERI) continues to develop a periodic national ranking of the quality of life in cities.
This year's ranking included 25 cities. Last year's ranking included 18 cities, joined by seven large single-industry cities.
The ranking is based on 54 indicators (statistical and departmental data).
All indicators are grouped into 6 sub-factors - economy, business environment, social sphere, culture, sports and leisure, urban infrastructure, quality of urban environment and 13 categories of indicators:
1) Economic growth
2) Material welfare
3) Labor market
4) Evaluation of business environment
5) Existing labor force
6) Future labor force/education
7) Health care
8) Culture, sports and leisure
9) Transport infrastructure
10) Living conditions
11) Comfortable urban environment
12) Safety
13) State of the environment
The 1st place in the ranking of the quality of life in the cities was taken by Nur-Sultan with a score of 6.67 points. The city was in the leading position in three factors at once: "Economy and Business" (1st place, 7.43 points), "Human Resources" (2nd place, 6.6 points) and "Infrastructure" (4th place, 6.04 points).
Almaty is in the 2nd place in the ranking with 5.67 points. The city took the lead in the "Human Resources" factor (1st place, 6.81 points) and the "Economy and Business" factor (4th place, 6.07 points).
In the 3rd place in the ranking with 5.49 points was Atyrau.
The 4th place is occupied by Aktau. The best position of the city can be noted on the "Economy and Business" factor (2nd place, 7.23 points). The average level of the "Infrastructure" factor (12th place, 5.4 points).
Kostanay is in the 5th place in the ranking. In the current ranking, the city's relatively high position can be noted in the "Economy and Business" factor (5th place, 5.76 points) and "Human Resources" (4th place, 5.93 points).
The 6th position of the ranking is occupied by the regional center of North Kazakhstan region - Petropavlovsk.
Overall, the city showed above-average values for the following factors: "Economy and Business" (9th place, 4.93 points), "Human Resources" (10th place, 4.96 points) and "Infrastructure" (10th place, 5.57 points).
The 7th position is taken by Uralsk (16th place in 2020). The city's best position was in the "Human Resources" factor - the 3rd place with 6.26 points.
The 8th place in the ranking is occupied by Aktobe. In the current ranking we can note the high position of the city in the "Economy and Business" factor - the 6th place with 5.34 points.
The 9th place in the ranking is occupied by Karaganda. The city ranked high on the "Infrastructure" factor - the 6th place with 5.81 points. This regional center ranked 11th in the "Economy and Business" factor and 14th in the "Human Resources" factor.
Pavlodar is at the 10th place in the current ranking. The city has the highest score in the "Infrastructure" factor - the 8th place with 5.64 points. The city ranked 12th in the "Economy and Business" factor, and also 12th in the "Human Resources" factor.
Stepnogorsk, a newcomer to the ranking, took the 11th place. The best performance of this single-industry city was in the "Infrastructure" factor - the 3rd place with 6.16 points.
Shymkent, a city of national importance, is on the 12th place of the ranking. The city ranks high on the "Infrastructure" factor - the 6th place with 5.69 points. Shymkent ranked 10th in the "Economy and Business" factor, and 25th in the "Human Resources" factor.
Ust-Kamenogorsk is 13th in the ranking. We can note the high position of the city on the "Economy and Business" factor - the 7th place with 5.15 points.
Taldykorgan is in the 14th place. The city ranks highest in the "Human Resources" indicator set - 5.86 points and 5th position. The city ranks low on other factors.
Kyzylorda is at the 15th place in the ranking. High values are noted for the "Human Resources" indicator - 5.49 points and 7th position. The city ranks low on other factors.
Kokshetau occupies the 16th position. The city scored the highest on the "Economy and Business" factor - 5.10 points and the 8th position. The city ranks low on other factors.
Single-industry cities of Balkhash, Zhezkazgan, and Ridder occupy places 17, 18, and 19.
The city of Taraz ranked 20th. The city has the best positions in the Human Resources indicator set - 5.16 points and the 9th position. The city ranks low on other factors.
Single-industry cities of Ekibastuz and Satpayev are ranked 21st and 22nd.
The 23rd place in the ranking is taken by Semey with 4.16 points. The reasons for such a low rating of the regional center is the lack of development of the social sphere.
At 24th place in the ranking was Turkestan with 4.13 points. The city's low position is due to its underdeveloped economy and the current state of infrastructure. Turkestan ranks 23rd in the "Economy and Business" factor (3.48 points). According to the "Infrastructure" factor the city took the 21st place (4.55 points). The city showed the highest result on th "Human Resources" factor, taking 17th place with 4.44 points.
The last 25th place in the ranking is occupied by the single-industry city of Zhanaozen. The city's highest score was in Human Resources, the 13th place and 4.75 points. The city has a good health care system and is well provided with other social facilities, including culture and sports. The city shows low rates of migration and provision with library facilities.
Zhanaozen ranks 16th (4.90 points) among the 25 cities surveyed on the "Infrastructure" factor. The city has a favorable environmental situation. However, the city's rating is reduced by insufficient landscaping and a lack of public gardens and parks. The city demonstrates high rates of public safety and law and order. The city ranks low in terms of the comfort of the urban environment and transport infrastructure development.
Zhanaozen ranked lowest in the "Economy and Business" factor (25th place and 2.97 points). The weak position of the city is due to the lack of diversification of the structure of the city's economy and low indicators of SME development.
